Plateau Property Management invests in solar energy!

Plateau Property Management News:

Just over 250 apartments in Los Alamos are solar powered!

Plateau Property Management began the process of installing solar power in the fall of 2019 and was originally expected to be fully operational by April 2020, then COVID hit.

While most of the panels were installed by the end of 2019, major upgrades to the electrical systems of all but one apartment complex needed to be made to accommodate the new solar systems. Supply issues in obtaining materials and work restrictions due to COVID have created delays for contractors and utilities in Los Alamos County.

Fortunately, thanks to the hard work of LD Electric, Los Alamos County, NM Solar Group and the staff of Plateau Property Management, along with the patience of residents, the project is nearing completion.

The apartments’ main owner, Bruce Norman, said the delays, while frustrating, were understandable.

“Any project of this size and complexity is bound to encounter delays, but when you throw COVID into the mix, all bets were off,” Norman said. “We are very proud and delighted to be so close to seeing all of our apartments using the sun to provide electricity to our residents. There will be times when we add electricity to the grid and times when we draw at the cost of the $1.5 million project, this was a significant commitment, but we are proud to do our part for the environment.

Solar power is generated at: Ponderosa Pines, The Chapel Apartments, Iris St. Apartments, Tres Casitas and 20 of the 40 units at The Cottonwoods at Gold St.

Don Taylor, who purchased one of Tres Casitas’ three buildings several years ago, coordinated with Norman when the project was underway and was also able to install solar power on his 8 units.

Plateau Property Management has a long history of managing its properties in an environmentally responsible manner. As well as supplying most of their apartments’ electrical needs now, they started a hugely popular recycling program at The Chapel Apartments 25 years ago and moved that model to Ponderosa Pines when they purchased this property in 2015. In 2018, they installed an electrical system. car charging station in Ponderosa Pines, the first apartment complex in the county to offer this feature. Additionally, they have replaced old single-glazed windows in all of its properties, installed low-flow toilets and taps, upgraded insulation and improved cladding.

“As a major housing provider in Los Alamos, I know that everything we do to reduce our environmental impact really adds up over time,” Norman said.

As an added bonus to the electrical upgrades, all apartments that previously did not have air conditioning will now have AC units. Work on this project has already begun and should be completed in the coming weeks.

Plateau Property Management would like to thank Daniel and all the guys at LD Electric, Stephen Mares and Los Alamos County, Alex and Matt from NM Solar Group, and all of our residents and staff for their efforts in making this a reality!
